A rare example of an ironstone bread plate from the Victorian period.
This bread platter dates from the mid to late 1800s, and would have proudly displayed home baked bread almost daily. The importance of bread as a core staple item then was shown in any mottos that might be found on breadboards and bread plates from the time.
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread” is moulded into the surround of this platter in gothic stylised typography which is still clear. Wheat ears flow from a central plaque in the middle of the plate. Standing on a small raised plinth, and with natural timeworn and buttery colouring, it’s ideal both for display and use.
This bread platter is in overall good condition. There is crazing all over, which has lightly stained and some fading to the gold trimmed colouring of the typography. There are some nibbles to the rim of the platter and also a hairline at one end, although this is tight and fine and is more notable from the underside than the top.
