A lovely rare example of a large antique Victorian breadboard, dating from the mid to late 1800s, with a "Waste Not: Want Not" motto framed by a lovely carved ribbon banner tying together sheafs of wheat and barley.
This 19th Century breadboard has a wonderfully rich deep colouring and patina to it. Although there is some wear to the centre of the board, with knife marks showing its use over the years, and general wear to the base where it has been stood up, this is nonetheless a stunning breadboard.
The border of this board is carved with the motto "Waste Not: Want Not" in highly stylised, gothic script. The use of a colon is very rare. At the base are a sheaf each of barley and wheat, tied together by a flowing ribbon. This carving in this section has worn lightly but the board still stands out from the depth and crispness of the motto and ribbon. It is rare to see them looking as impressive as this still after many years of use.
The board is in overall excellent condition and sits flat. There are old knife marks from use, but these have blended well into the dark patina of the board, creating a natural timeworn appeal. There are some small knocks to the base rim of this board but they don’t detract from the impressive finish on this board.
Width, 30cm; Depth, 3cm
