Stunning Antique Victorian Deeply Carved Bread Knife
Stunning Antique Victorian Deeply Carved Bread Knife
This is a fabulous and very rarely seen example of an exceptionally carved antique Victorian carved wooden English bread knife.
Dating from the mid to late 1800s, this bread knife is a stunning example with deep and multi layered carved detail. It is also longer than most examples you come across.
A ribbon banner runs the length of the handle, with 'Bread' carved along it. And it is flanked by foliage and ears of wheat. The depth of carving is very impressive and is just as crisp as when this was first produced. The blade too has lovely details, etched with 'Bread Knife' and with lovely detail of a field of wheat being sown and harvested.
The handle has a rich colour and patination to it still. The blade has tarnished after contact with water over time. There is also some fading to one side of the depiction of the wheat field. Nonetheless, it is still a quality piece of Victorian kitchenalia which is otherwise in excellent and solid condition.
Length, 34.5cm; Widest point of blade, 3.3cm
