This is a very pretty example of an antique wicker basket, dating from around 1900, which would have been the perfect size for a picnic or lunch.
The basket has been exquisitely made, with the wicker weaved around a solid wooden frame which still remains stable. Colour and decoration has been added with bands of red and purple around the middle and across the lid. While these colours have faded on the outside of the basket, you can see how vibrant they once were on the inside. The original metal fittings and leather handle and buckle still remain, although these have now worn with age.
Considering the age of this piece, it is very fair condition. Apart from the wear to the fixings and the fading in the colouring, there is just some small breakages to the wicker in places and there are no worm holes in it, as can so often be the case on these old things.
A highly decorative piece perfect for many uses around the home.
Length, 25cm; Width, 17cm; Height, 20cm (including handle laid down).
