Oozing charm and patina, this is a lovely 19th Century 'toupin' or cooking pot, sourced from Provence in France.

Pots like these were often used as confit pots to store meats and food in. The interior and part of the outside of these earthenware pots were glazed to make them easier to wash and keep free from stains. With its integral handle, they were also used as small cooking pots.

From the wear and patina on this piece, I think this was undoubtedly used as a cooking pot. At some point in its lifetime, it has suffered a burn on one side of the pot, resulting in some wear to the edge and glaze. This has resulted in a mottled effect on one side. Showing just how durable these pots are though, the pot remains in sturdy condition. In addition to the wear to the side of the pot, there is a chip to the base, but the pot does still stand upright.

A unique decorative antique for the home.
