A wonderful example of a rare antique Victorian carved breadboard, featuring a beautiful border of scalloped rosettes.
Dating to the late 1800s, deeply carved breadboards likely this are becoming rarer and rarer to source, especially in good usable condition. This is a lovely example with a nice rich patination. I adore the repeated floral geometric pattern around the border which has been exceptionally well carved.
The board is in very good condition for its age. It sits flat and, although there are knife marks from use, these don't detract from the decoration in any way. The middle section has dipped a little and is lighter in colour from where it has been used but this adds to the character and age of the piece.
There is a small scorch mark on the back of the board but this isn't unusual as they were often stored and used by stoves.
