Rare Midi Sized James Keiller Dundee Marmalade Advertising Pot
Rare Midi Sized James Keiller Dundee Marmalade Advertising Pot
This is a listing for a very rarely seen small ‘midi’ sized James Keiller Dundee marmalade antique advertising pot, dating from the late Victorian period at the end of the 1800s/early 1900s.
Photo 2 shows the size of this pot in contrast to an extra large tall three pound size version. This other pot is not included for sale but is available to purchase separately.
These ironstone James Keiller marmalade pots were all handmade by Maling of Newcastle in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Famed for its popular brand of marmalade, the James Keiller company produced their marmalade pots in a variety of sizes, and these are the more scarce examples of a small sample sized marmalade pot. Pots of these size are getting harder and harder to find. I have only ever had a small number available before.
This pot features exactly the same black transfer print advertising James Keiller's Dundee Marmalade, which has won numerous awards at international exhibitions, only in miniature format.
As most jars were discarded with common waste at the time, they often have discoloration and chips. However, this adds to their charm as highly decorative, weathered and chippy pieces.
This pot was recently dug up from a Victorian dumping ground and therefore shows some of the scars of its life underground. There are some scuffs, marks and staining in places as well as nibbles to the base rim. There is also a crack running down the right hand side of the pot although this is stable. There are no chips or crazing.
