Rare Large Antique Glass Shop Advertising Jar for Margerison Soaps
Rare Large Antique Glass Shop Advertising Jar for Margerison Soaps
A great large sized example of an early 20th Century shop counter glass display jar, used to display the range of Margerison soaps available for sale.
This deceivingly large lidded glass jar would have sat on shop counters, advertising the soaps for sale and having them available or customers to select from. The white acid etching of the maker’s name is still striking and in excellent order (although difficult to photograph to show off its true beauty). The name of the soap manufacturer - Margerison, which was based in Preston - is in stylised gothic lettering and it is framed beautifully by a floral and leaf border.
This is a heavy and sturdy two-piece glass jar. It would make a perfect talking and feature point in any bathroom, where it can be used to display a wide range of toiletries and cloths.
In excellent condition for its age, there are just a small number of air bubbles in the glass, and a small chip to the base where the join has been knocked at some stage. But there are no cracks or other nibbles. There is a small amount of scale deposit on the lid but this isn't overly notable.
Overall, it's a stunning display item which is sure to make an impression.
Height - 32.5cm overall (the base is 20cm high); Diameter, 20cm
