Made by Maling in the early 20th Century, this is a rarely seen example of a large white ironstone picnic box.
Sandwich boxes like this would have been part of elaborate picnic baskets attached to cars. They now rarely survive as whole sets. This example was made by Maling, who were famous for their ironstone pieces, with a faded mark on the base.
This picnic box is a lovely large size and is complete with its original lid.
In fair condition for its age, there are no chips or cracks on this box. There is light crazing all over and some of this has stained where it has been in touch with the metal lid. Most notably, the lid of the box has suffered some oxidisation, and has worn patches all over. This is more notable on one half and so could be covered up to some extent if this box was to be used as a display piece.
Despite this wear to the lid, it is still an attractive piece.
Length, 25cm; Width, 17cm; Height, 13cm (16cm to top of lid)
