Rare Antique White Ironstone Mixing or Pudding Bowl with RAF Logo
Rare Antique White Ironstone Mixing or Pudding Bowl with RAF Logo
This is a lovely good sized white ironstone mixing or pudding bowl, dating from the 1930s and featuring the logo for the RAF, the Royal Air Force.
Made by Ashworth Bros, this company was renowned for quality ironstone pieces. This wonderful white ironstone bowl features the logo for the RAF very clearly around on one side in striking underglaze blue print.
Tableware like this would have been used for serving food to those serving in the Royal Air Force and were most likely used for formal dinners for more senior officers. It is rare to find them, especially as it dates to the 1940s and would have been used during the Second World War.
This bowl has a simple, classic shape. It is in fair condition for its age, with no cracks, chips or crazing. It does have wear and scuff marks to the top rim and base rim. One side side are a small number of firing faults where the glaze is incomplete and there is a small amount of staining, as well as a small bulging section. However, these add to the natural timeworn appeal of the piece.
And, nonetheless, this is a very sturdy and heavyweight bowl which is suitable for a number of different purposes around the home. It is also a small snapshot of history, dating from the time the RAF rose to prominence taking such an active role in the second World War.
