Rare Antique Welsh 'Ymenyn' Carved Butter Dish
Rare Antique Welsh 'Ymenyn' Carved Butter Dish
This is a wonderful example of a rarely seen early 20th Century carved Welsh wooden butter dish, complete with an ironstone liner made by the Goss factory.
This rich coloured treen butter dish is quite unique, featuring ‘Ymenyn’ - the Welsh term for butter - nicely carved into the top of the border. There are some lovely details on the wooden butter board which makes it stand out in terms of quality, with small sun shapes helping to frame the border of the 'Ymenyn' motto at each end.
The butter board comes with a liner made by the WH Goss pottery, with the saying 'Bore Da Snowdon', or good morning from Snowdon. This was intended as a souvenir gift for those visiting the Welsh mountain. The liner doesn't quite fit inside the wooden dish, and so they weren't originally sold together. But they date from the same period. England. The liner is later, dating from the 1950s, and so doesn’t quite match the board.
Although they are not an original pair, the two still work well and complement each other nicely. The board itself could be displayed without the liner.
Both the board and liner are in excellent condition. The butter board itself is a very rare find and stands out in its quality of carving, which is still very crisp and clear.
