This is an outstanding antique Victorian butter brick mould, which is very rarely seen in this style.

This primitive mould would have been made in the late 1800s. A lovely large size, there is a fabulous carved image of a grazing cow alongside a picket fence and some crops. Often, the carvings in these moulds helped to identify where butter was produced. Due to the naive and simple carving on this example, in this case it most likely represented a small dairy farm which produced the butter.

This mould has all its original cast iron fittings. Joined with an elaborate lock at one end, and a hinge at the other, the whole mould opens up to release the butter brick once set.

With its rustic patina, it is also a very tactile piece. This would look beautiful simply sat proudly on display to give a rustic touch to your interior kitchen styling.

Apart from general age and wear to the fittings, the mould is in excellent overall condition. There are some surface scratches and marks to the wooden surface, and wear to the edges of the wood in places but this adds natural timeworn charm to the piece. There is a very slight wobble on the handle but it is sturdy.

Length, 24cm; Width, 13cm, Depth, 13cm (including handle)
