This is a listing for a very hard to find example of a James Keiller Dundee Marmalade pots - the scarce extra large and tall three pound pot.
The three pound pots tend to come in the dumpier, rounder size but this example is a tall, slim version of which I’ve only ever seen a handful of times.
This extra large tall three pound Dundee is a nice chippy and weathered example, with a fabulous worn patina. Likely to have been dug up from an old Victorian dumping ground, this advertising pot bears some of the scars of its time underground.
These pots were produced by Maling of Newcastle at the end of the nineteenth Century and early part of the twentieth Century. They were intended to be throwaway items and were often discarded with rubbish.
Most notably, there is a chip to the top rim on the right hand side towards the back. This measures about 2.5cm in length. The location of this chip means it isn’t overly notable from the front when on display. There is also no other damage to the pot.
There are patches of staining and discolouration to the pot, which are likely a result of its time buried underground. But there is no crazing and the Keiller logo is still very clear.
These rarer versions of the James Keiller Dundee Marmalade advertising crocks are increasingly hard to find, and are highly desired amongst collectors. That’s because they look great and are a fantastic large size which makes them perfect for use around the home, as well as on display. They are very useful as kitchen storage jars and look beautiful used for potted plants.
