Rare Antique Victorian Deeply Carved Breadboard - Ivy, Rosettes, Barley & Wheat
A wonderful example of an English Victorian deeply carved breadboard, featuring carving of an ivy vine tying together rosettes, barley and wheat.
With such elaborate carving it is likely that this subject was designed to be targeted at the wedding market, as a present for newlyweds, with the subject matter a symbol of binding love. Since Victorian times, it was common for extravagant breadboards to be given to newly married couples.
These English carved treen breadboards are becoming rarer and rarer to source. This board has seen many years of use, with wear commensurate to its use. Although the carving is still very clear and well defined, there are knife marks from use and a dip in the centre of the board. There is wear and some knocks to the edge of the board, some of which have been caused by scolds to the back of the board where this would have been near a stove. There is one old worm hole plus some light staining and discolouration to the board in places. However, regular waxing would most likely cover this. It sits largely flat but can be pushed down slightly on one side.
Nonetheless, the carving on the border is stunning and really makes this board stand out, with the layered rosettes and wheat particularly impressive.
