A stunning and rare late Victorian stilton spoon produced by the Army & Navy Cooperative Society.
Most likely dating from the later Victorian period, this is a rare and elaborate stilton spoon, with a beautifully carved handle. Stilton spoons were useful for ‘digging’ stilton from the centre of a wheel of stilton, which would traditionally be served at the end of a meal alongside port. The space shaped spoon made it easier to get to the cheese.
This spoon stands out for the nicely detailed decoration both on the silver plated scoop and on its handle. With the mark for the Cooperative Society on the back of the spoon, the front features nice decoration. However, what really stands out on this piece is the carved bovine handle, which is rounded and layered to a lovely effect.
Apart from some odd age spots on the handle, this spoon is otherwise in excellent condition. It is a fantastic quality piece of kitchenalia.
Length, 25.5cm
Width (at widest point of spoon), 3.5cm
