A lovely example of an antique late Victorian breadboard, dating from the mid to late 1800s, with a rarely seen “Give Us Today Day Our Daily Bread" motto around the border.
English bread boards with mottos carved into them are becoming increasingly difficult to source. This is a particularly rare example, with the motto in a more unusual font that I normally come across. It is framed at the bottom by wheat ears and the board has a gorgeous honey coloured patina to it.
There are been some wear to this board as it has been used over the years but the border is still very clear. The knife marks and wear have blended into the board over the years, creating a beautiful patina.
There is an old scorch mark on the back of the board where it has bee left too close to a stove (this is a remarkably common feature). But this isn't overly notable from the front. The board has also warped very slightly over time, resulting it having a slightly elongated shape from the top to bottom. There is a therefore a slight wobble if you were looking to use this board, but it is perfectly usable still. A hook has been added to hang this board on display, but this could be removed if desired.
