Rare Antique Silver Plated Pie Hatelet - Meat Themed Selection
Rare Antique Silver Plated Pie Hatelet - Meat Themed Selection
These are examples of rarely seen silver plated French pie markers or hatelets, in a variety of different meat themed shapes which date to around 1900.
Sourced from France, these were used as pie markers in large elaborate pies, either to the show guests which type of flling was in the pie or to add a decorative finishing touch. They were also used as brochettes, or skewers for grilled food.
Silver plated, they have tarnished and discoloured over the years although they could of course be polished if desired. The decorative ends are all hollow.
Bull - the marking on this is unclear, although likely to be H France & Co. In good condition, the top edge of the bull has lifted slightly but a highly desirable and rarer piece to find. Length, 23cm; Width, 4cm; Depth, 2.5cm
Cockerel - marked H. France & Co mark, in good condition. Length, 23.5cm; Width, 4.1cm; Depth, 1.5cm
Pheasant - good condition, marked H France & Co. Length, 24cm; Width, 9.5cm; Depth, 2cm
Swallow - marking is unclear, some heavier tarnishing on this bird. Length, 21cm; Width, 6cm; Depth, 1cm
Wild Boar - a lovely piece, this has less tarnishing than the other pieces but is just marked 'France' and so probably dates to the 1920s. Length, 21cm; Width, 6cm; Depth, 1.3cm
Pig - Like the boar, this is also marked France and has a little less tarnishing. Length, 21cm; Width, 6cm; Depth, 1.5cm
Rabbits - two are available, one marked H France and Co which is a little more heavily tarnished and is also slightly earlier in date. The other is marked France. They have the same dimensions: length, 21.5cm; width, 6cm; depth, 1.1cm
