This is a fantastic and unique piece of antique French artwork.
Commissioned to be the town plaque for a small town, Hersin-Coupigny in the North of France, this is an amazing survivor.
Dating from 1908, this plaster sculpture was most likely to have been hung on display in or around the local town hall. With ivy sprigs wrapping themselves around branches and twigs as a frame to the piece, a central fountain takes centre stage, with the local countryside also featuring in the background.
The timing of this piece is quite poignant, made only a few years before this area was substantially affected by the outbreak of World War One.
Dating back more than 100 years, there is some light damage to this piece in places. There are small breakages to the leaves and foliage in places, plus a crack in the feet of the lady above the fountain. There is also a small area of discolouration in the bottom right hand corner But overall, these are quite minor and it is nonetheless a highly decorative piece of history.
