A stunning and quality example of a rare 19th Century French confectioner's tool, in the rarely available shape of a horse.

This is a very nicely cut, and heavy horse shaped herb chopper. The horse's hooves and head are very clearly defined. This cleaver has a great sturdiness to it, with the steel blade continuing through the handle, to offer counter balance when in use.  The handle itself is encased in copper, and fixed together with brass rivets.

Figural and decorative cleavers like this were commonly used by confectioners for chopping sugar work or ice blocks. It was also common for them to be given as wedding presents in France through the 19th Century.

The chopper is in overall great condition and is a very heavy piece. The steel blade has darkened through age, but could be polished up if desired. There is also some pitting to the blade. The handle has some surface scratches and minor dents from use but overall the quality of this piece really does shine through.

Length, 32cm; Height, 15cm at tallest point.
