Rare Antique Edwardian White Ironstone "Pepper" Storage Jar
Rare Antique Edwardian White Ironstone "Pepper" Storage Jar
This is a listing for a highly collectable and rarely seen small sized Edwardian banded white ironstone storage jar for "PEPPER".
White ironstone storage jars were popular in the early part of the twentieth Century, when foodstuffs were often sold in loose measures in local grocers shops. The smaller sized spice jars, like this example, are now very difficult to source and are highly sought after by collectors. This is understandable, as it is a very sweet size.
This pot is in overall fair condition. It has aged, with coffee coloured crazing all over and some patches of staining, which is particularly pronounced around the top rim. There are no cracks but there are a couple of small knocks to the pot, on the side and on the base rim. There is also a small stain where there is a firing fault to the glaze on the side. The lid, while dating from the same period, possibly belonged to a smaller pot originally. However, it does fit. The black 'Pepper' label on this pot is also still very clear and the aged look has created a distinctive and unique patina. It's extremely rare to find this subject.
