This is a rare Edwardian white ironstone butter dish or crock.
In Edwardian times, butter dishes were used commonly to keep butter cool. This circular version would have been used in the kitchen of a family home at the time
Dating from the early 1900s, this butter dish is in nice condition for its age. Although there is no lid, the dish is still very usable as a butter dish when entertaining. There is no crazing, except in one small part of the base. There are no chips or cracks, although there are some spots of staining and age in places, which are more notable around the top rim. There are also a couple of small knocks to the surface here.
Overall, though, the dish is in very clean condition and is usable. It has a striking ‘Butter’ label across the front of the dish in under glaze black transfer print. Although this is a little faded in places, it is still clearly legible.
marks where the surface has come into contact with dairy produce. However, generally this staining is quite mild
This is a very rare piece of antique kitchenalia. It's perfectly usable in a kitchen today, or would look great on display.
Diameter, 15cm
Height, 9cm
