A charming example of an Edwardian white ironstone spouted milk bowl, used to separate the cream from fresh milk, produced around 1910.

Produced by Grimwades in the early 20th Century, this Staffordshire firm often patented its designs of household kitchen equipment. They were renowned for a whole range of advertising pieces with characteristic green transfer print, including this Safety Milk Bowl.

Like other Grimwades pieces, the use of language and typography on this antique milk bowl provides a fascinating insight into the Edwardian period. Although a little faded, the name of the product near the spout on this bowl shows an elaborate use of font. The description of how to use the product on the underside of the bowl is most charming though. It lists the following advantages in using this spouted milk bowl:

- Won't slop over
- Pours easily
- Prevents flies walking into the milk
- Hangs up when not in use.

And they conclude this bowl is "A DESIDERATUM IN EVERY HOUSEHOLD".

This large spouted ironstone milk bowl is still very useful in modern times, with its lipped rim and spout. It would equally look great as part of a white ironstone or advertising collection.

The bowl is in excellent condition for its age. Aside from some minor patches of age spots, there are no chips, cracks or crazing. While the transfer print on the spout has worn a little with age, the transfer print on the underside is still extremely vivid and clear.
