Pocket watch display cases are highly sought after and therefore very difficult to source. This example is a highly unusual and very rare piece.

Dating from the latter part of the 19th Century, it has a bevel edged glass lid, designed to capture the light and show off the contents. The original pink silk cushion has a timeworn charm to it. Surprisingly, some of the silk is still in tact having been hidden under layers of dust for many years. But there are also parts which are becoming threadbare It's delightfully pretty.

The most special part of this display case, though, is the outside which depicts cherubs playing on each side and a gargoyle type figure on the back.

The display case has a functioning hinge, handle to lift the lid and a clip for hanging a watch from. It would be beautiful used to display a special piece of jewellery.

There are small chips to the top left and right corners of the glass, plus one missing tooth where the glass is held in place. The legs of the display case also bend in slightly but I'm unable to tell if it was perhaps made this way. Overall, though, the condition is very good.

An exquisite and very special decorative French antique.
