Large Antique Victorian Gingerbread - Cycling Man
Large Antique Victorian Gingerbread - Cycling Man
An extra large late 19th Century carved oak gingerbread mould, featuring a man and his cycle.
Likely Dutch in origin, this is a very rare subject matter. It is deeply and well carved out, which would produce a well turned out piece of gingerbread. Instead of baking, gingerbread at that time was boiled, poured into moulds like this and left to set.
In lovely condition, there are some light surface scratches. The wood is framed at each end with a small baton and the right hand side is slightly loose. There is also a small split in the wood on the back side where it meets this baton, but the whole piece is stable. There are also some small holes on the back, which appear to be where the piece may have had a fixing attached.
