This is a lovely piece of antique treen kitchenalia dating from the late nineteenth Century. It is also a rare extra large size.
This Victorian hardwood butter stamp features a rare subject of acorns and oak leaves. Stamps like this would have been used to decorate freshly made butter, and were also used by farms at the time as a mark of where the butter was produced. With mellow tones, this stamp has a large carved border, with the detail of the acorn and oak leaf still very clear.
Antique butter stamps like this look lovely displayed as part of a kitchenalia collection. They are also excellent used in the modern kitchen as biscuit stamps. They work particularly well on shortbread.
The butter print is in good condition for its age, with a lovely worn patina and colouring. The edges of the underside of the stamp have been knocked and scratched in their lifetime, but these have now worn into the wood, and are a sign that this stamp was a piece which was very much in use.
