Produced by the renowned French pottery makers H Boulenger of Choisy le Roi, this is a beautifully timeworn footed terre de fer large saladier, or serving bowl.
In a blue transferware colourway, the Balzac swag pattern around the top and inside rims of the bowl is beautiful.
The bowl has suffered some significant damage through its lifetime. But as is standard practice on many French pieces, it has been repaired. These repairs are focused on the base, where a significant crack has been glued. Chips to the bowl here have also been filled in.
These repairs mean the bowl the bowl stands upright securely. Whilst I would caution again heavy use, it is still a functional and highly decorative large bowl.
The rest of the saladier has a beautiful timeworn colouring to it, where aged crazing has taken on a buttery hue. There are three significant scratches to the inside of the bowl, but again these do not affect its use in any way.
Diameter, 26.5cm; Height, 11cm
