Rich with patina and buttery colouring, this is a fabulous example of an antique French timeworn terre de fer soup bowl, dating to the early 20th Century.
This is a striking decorative item. With hand painted decoration in red and green, the main focus of the bowl is a strolling cockerel. The bowl has a distinctive folk art feel to it.
The piece has a rustic feel to it, having weathered and worn naturally over the years. Most notably, there is a crack on the base. This does penetrate through the centre but it is tight and fine. There is also stained crazing all over. There are also a couple of chips to the glaze on the edge of the bowl, but these have taken on an aged patina.
