This is a listing for a wonderful rarely seen antique late 19th Century French brulot coffee cup, in aged and timeworn condition. It is very rare to see examples this old. It is a heavy piece made from thickset ironstone.
Used in bistros and cafes, coffee was an expensive commodity at the time and was served in thick cups to help keep it warm and to be at less risk of spillages. The base of these cups was indented to have a serving of brandy in afterwards, which would have been warmed by the coffee.
This brulot is in chippy condition, wearing the scars of a life well lived. There are some chips and nibbles, plus two cracks on the front and back of the cup. There is also stained crazing all over. These flaws give it a beautiful and unique patina, though, and it's a wonderful decorative piece for display.
