Antique Victorian White Ironstone Bread Platter - Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
Antique Victorian White Ironstone Bread Platter - Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
A rare example of a plain white ironstone bread plate from the Victorian period.
This ironstone bread platter dates from the mid to late 1800s, and would have proudly displayed home baked bread almost daily. The importance of bread as a core staple item then was shown by using biblical references in any mottos that might be found on breadboards and plates. “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread” was very popular, and is moulded into the surround of this platter in gothic stylised typography.
It is rare to find bread plates like this in plain white, which makes them a desirable object in the modern home now. It’s ideal both for display and use.
This example has a weathered and worn patina, with stained crazing all over which is more pronounced on the handles and base. There are also some light flake chips in places and a small chip to the base rim. However, this does give the piece a more unique and natural timeworn charm.
Otherwise, this bread plate is in good condition and is perfect for ongoing use and display purposes.
