Antique Victorian Primitive Style Butter Stamp with Scottish Thistles

This is a listing for a rare Scottish butter stamp with a folk art style to it, featuring two thistles.

Dating from the late 19th Century, this butter mould has a rustic and primitive patina. An unusual style, it is likely this was created for a small farm to identify the butter it produced. The carving is simpler in style compared to other butter stamps you see, but it is still packed with lots of detail and includes a nice decorative border. 

In good condition for its age, some of the carving has worn, plus there is wear and knocks to the outer border and handle. But this adds to its natural rustic and timeworn charm. There are no splits to the wood but there is one old worm hole which has been treated.

Butter stamps like this make excellent decorative pieces of kitchenalia, and are also good to use either for decorating small butter pats or as use as biscuit stamps (they work particularly well on shortbread).
