Antique Victorian Prattware English Advertising Pot - Roman Decoration
Antique Victorian Prattware English Advertising Pot - Roman Decoration
This is a listing for a rarely seen example of a Victorian advertising jar, featuring a highly decorative stylised Roman scene.
Dating from the mid to late 1800s, this stoneware advertising jar would have been used to sell creams or pastes at the time. The eye catching Roman scene draws you in and differs from all angles. For what was considered a throwaway item at the time, it shows the level of detail the Victorians would go to to help sell day to day items.
Made of stoneware, it is an example of Prattware, which was often used for various types of packaging. I very rarely see these pots and, when I have come across them, they inevitably have damage having been dug from old dumping grounds. The excellent condition of this pot therefore stands out. Although it is slightly stained from its time underground, most notably around the top rim, there are no chips or cracks.
It’s a wonderful rare piece of antique advertising which would look lovely on display and would also make for a unique bud vase or decorative piece for those wanting to add a vintage or rustic look to their interior.
