A wonderful example of a rarely seen Victorian dating from the late 1800s.
This white ironstone plate is a wonderful example produced for the scale manufacturers, William Smith & Co of 158 Borough High Street in London. Advertising pieces for this firm are not often seen. As well as featuring advertising for the firm in fabulous black transfer print typography at the base, the scale plate is very ornate with Lady Justice also featuring prominently.
These ironstone plates are great for serving cheese or butter on in the modern kitchen as the ironstone keeps them cool.
This scale plate is in good condition, with no crazing or cracks. There are some surface scratches, scuffs and age marks, notably on the sides and edges of the plate from where it would have been in daily use. Overall, though, it is a clean example. and a transfer blemish to the right of the ledge on which Lady Justice is standing.
However, overall this is an excellent quality piece of antique kitchenalia. Its size lends itself for use as a cheese plate.
Diameter, 25.7cm; Height, 1cm
