These are wonderful and rarely seen examples of an antique Victorian carved sugar mould, which would now make a lovely decorative feature. A total of two are available to choose from.
Both moulds date to the late 19th Century, and feature deep and intricate carvings of berries, flowers and foliage. Moulds like these would have been used to produce intricate icing shapes which would adorn cakes. The carving on both these pieces appears to be hawthorn, a symbol of love and fertility. So it is likely these mould would typically have been used to decorate wedding cakes.
The carvings on both are still in very good condition. They have been turned into a decorative feature by a previous owner, with a layer of varnish applied to protect them and having had hooks attached to them (only the holes for the hooks remain on the left hand example).
There is general wear to the wood on both the pieces where it has suffered light knocks and marks over time. The left hand block is slightly thicker and early carvings of a similar pattern can be seen on the back, perhaps as this was used for practice. The right hand block also has some light water spots in places on the front of it.
