This is an excellent example of a Victorian carved wooden English bread knife.
Dating from the late 1800s, this bread knife has nicely carved detail. Featuring a deeply carved wheatsheaf, this is flanked by rosettes on each side as it meets the foliage towards the top. The carving is unusually deep and nicely carved. The handle also has a wonderful rich colour and has a nice finial on the end of it. The join to the steel blade is quality and sound.
The steel blade is in nice condition. There is some tarnishing towards the end but this wouldn’t affect its use. The maker’s name, Wingfield Rowbotham of Sheffield, is etched into the blade and their logo features a Royal crest.
In overall excellent condition, this carved bread knife is perfect for day to day use in the kitchen or shown off on display as part of an antique kitchenalia or treen collection.
Length, 31cm
Widest point of blade, 3.5cm
