This is a lovely piece of antique treen kitchenalia dating from the early to mid Century, with this sugar or icing mould featuring the carved emblem for the Gordon Highlanders, a former infantry regiment of the British Army based in Scotland.
In lovely crisp condition still, the emblem features all of the elaborate details of this regiment's emblem. This includes the Royal stag head sitting on a Crown, the regiment's 'Bydand' motto, meaning steadfast or abiding, and the name of the regiment sitting in a banner.
Created by the renowned British culinary company, GT Culpitt & Sons Ltd, the maker's name is engraved onto the edge of the mould. It's likely this was commissioned specifically for the regiment, to be used to decorate cakes and biscuits when regimental events were held.
This mould is in excellent condition for its age, with the carving still exceptionally crisp and clear. Although quite small in size, close inspection reveals finite details like the stag's fur and facial features. There is some light wear and staining to the edge of the mould but no damage. The mould number - 1829 - is marked on the back of the mould. There are some old glue marks here too, perhaps where the mould has previously been mounted as a display piece.
