Antique French Classical Style Hatelet or Skewer
Antique French Classical Style Hatelet or Skewer
Sourced from France, this was used as a marker in large elaborate pies to add a decorative finishing touch. It is beautifully styled in a classical shape of sweeping feathers and cornucopia. They were also used as brochettes, or skewers for grilled food.
Silver plated, this example has tarnished and discoloured over the years giving it more of a bronzed effect than silver, although they could of course be polished if desired. The decorative end is hollow and the skewer is marked H France & Co, which dates it to around 1900. There some oxidisation on the decorative handle which has a blue colour to it in places.
Length, 26cm; Width, 4.8cm; Depth, 1cm at deepest point.
