A lovely rustic example of a beautiful French 19th Century carved wooden butter mould.

Carved from a single piece of wood, it is a quality piece with inlaid stripes on the outer casing, a nice border and a carving of berries on a vine which has a folk art quality to it. 

This mould has worn over the year, with the external wax being scrubbed away to reveal a paler and washed colouring to the wood, which is very attractive. There are also a few minor knocks to the external casing, although nothing significant. There are a small number of old worm holes in the carved section and on the base, but the mould has been treated.
