This is a listing for a wonderful rarely seen antique late 19th Century French brulot coffee cup. It is a heavy piece made from thickset ironstone.
Used in bistros and cafes, coffee was an expensive commodity at the time and was served in thick cups to help keep it warm and to be at less risk of spillages. The base of these cups was indented to have a serving of brandy in afterwards, which would have been warmed by the coffee.
This example is in excellent condition, especially considering its age. There are no chips or cracks and the blue colouring is still very vivid. There is some light scuffs in places, plus some wear to the base rim. There is also a firing fault on the inside of the cup but this isn't significant and is a feature which has been present since the time of production.
