Antique English Breadboard with Marriage Inscription in Decorative Silver Plated Liner
Antique English Breadboard with Marriage Inscription in Decorative Silver Plated Liner
An unusual example of a turned sycamore breadboard complete with its original EPNS base dating from the 1908.
Consisting of two parts, a sycamore board has been turned with a fine groove around its edge. It sits inside a silver plate tray, with a simple but pretty fleur de lys pattern around its edge.
This early 20th Century breadboard is a great feature piece as it includes an inscription at the top of the liner tray. Breadboards were commonly given as wedding gifts and, with this example, the purchaser has gone to the added trouble of adding the following words:
"Presented to M. Comben - by Miss A Pike - on her marriage to A.E. Comben December 1st 1908"
The cutler's name is stamped onto the back of the board - Frank Mills & Co Ltd of Sheffield.
This is a nice piece of Victorian kitchenalia which is still in good condition. The decorartive tray has some tarnishing but could be polished. The board also has some knife marks and marks from use. But overall it is an attractive piece.
