A delightful treen egg rack to hold one dozen eggs, dating from the very start of the 20th Century.

This English wooden egg rack dates from the Edwardian period, with capacity to hold up to 12 eggs on a single tier. This more compact squarer shaped rack is quite difficult to source.

It was common for these racks to be used in the kitchens of large houses, where many eggs would be used daily. In fact, in Downton Abbey, the kitchen had an egg rack the same style as this, although it did run the entire length of the kitchen island.

It was common for these racks to be stacked on top of each other in order to deter pests from getting their hands on precious fresh eggs. Of simple construction, it has a primitive and rustic style.

It is in excellent condition, especially considering the age of the piece, with both legs firmly fixed in position and standing solidly. There is a small old split to the wood on one side, as is very common on these racks. But this is stable and not overly notable. There are some light surface stains but the enriched and aged patina on this piece really does stand out. This has also been enhanced with varnish at soe point. A highly decorative yet also fully functional piece of antique kitchenalia.
