This is a fabulous example of an antique Edwardian white ironstone tongue dish with natural timeworn charm.
Featuring an ornate scrolled pattern and ‘TONGUE’ across the centre of the plate in under glaze black transfer print, this is an excellent example of a tongue plate, dating from the early 1900s.
At the time, these plates would have been used in butchers shops to display the tongue it had for sale, which was a popular dish then, either sliced or whole. The middle section is raised to show the meat off.
They make excellent display pieces as part of a kitchenalia or white ironstone collection.
This plate is in very good condition, with no chips or cracks. There is very light crazing all over, which has taken on a light coffee colouring in the centre of the plate. But this adds a unique patina. There are also some tiny age spots in places around the outer section.
Diameter, 27cm; Height, 3cm
