This is a nice example of a carved antique Victorian English bread knife.
Dating from early 20th Century, this bread knife has worn over the years but still has a clearly recognisable carving of ivy leaves entwined with barley and wheat, Knives like this were often given as wedding gift, and these subjects were often carved together to symbolise unity.
The steel blade has 'Bread Knife' nicely etched into it in gothic stylised typography and the blase also bears the name of the cutler who sold it, J.House of 119 King St, Hammersmith.
This knife has worn over the years, with the carving on the handle having now mellowed. There are also some light splash marks and stains, and a small amount of damage to the metal join in the middle of the knife. As is common when they come into contact with water, there is also some tarnishing to the blade. The very tip of the blade has also worn.
Overall, though, this is a nice example of a carved antique bread knife.
Length, 32cm; Widest point of handle, 3cm
