This is a wonderful example of a rarely seen Edwardian carved Welsh wooden butter dish, complete with an ironstone liner made by the Midwinter factory.
Dating from around 1910, this rich coloured treen butter dish is quite unique, featuring ‘Ymenyn’ - the Welsh term for butter - nicely carved into the top of the border.
The butter board comes with a willow patterned liner made by the Midwinter pottery of Staffordshire, England. The liner is later, dating from the 1950s, and so doesn’t quite match the board. It sits well but is very slightly bigger than the space in the board and so does move around a little bit. For this reason, the board can’t be displayed on its side complete with the liner.
Although they are not an original pair, the two still work well and complement each other nicely. The board itself could be displayed without the liner.
Both the board and liner are in excellent condition. The butter board itself is a very rare find and stands out in its richness of colour.
Dimensions:
Width, 15cm
Height, 2cm
