Antique Early 20th Century Tongue Dish
Antique Early 20th Century Tongue Dish
An excellent example of an early 20th Century English tongue dish, produced by S.F. & Co (Fieldings) between 1917 & 1930.
This white ironstone Crown Devon plate has black scrolling transfer print decoration across the front, reading "Tongue Dish", and gold rim around the edges of the plate. At that time, tongue was a popular dish to eat. This plate would have been used to serve it up to a family or in butchers' shops as part of their displays.
These antique tongue plates make interesting display pieces. This example is in good over all condition, with no cracks or chips and only some very small lines of crazing which have developed. The base rim has a little wear commensurate with age, and there is also some fading to the gold gilt edging and transfer. There is also a small firing fault on the back and edge of the plate but these do not affect the overall great quality of this piece.
