A rare, highly collectable antique white ironstone drainer, with a scarcely found half moon handle, dating from the 1910s.

This is a great piece of collectable kitchenalia. Grimwades patented its white ironstone pieces of kitchen equipment in the early part of the 20th Century, and were keen to use their trademark green transfer print to highlight both the benefits of their products and to instruct customers on how they should be used.

Ceramic drainers like this were usually placed in sinks to help wash fruit and vegetables. In modern times, these make excellent items to display around the kitchen. This example has a very handle half moon handle, which also helps this to display easily. This model is hard to find; most drainers, including other examples made by Grimwades, have no handle.

The text reads: "The Grimwade - Patent - Hygienic Drainer. Conflex Flutes. Bevel Edge Holes. Made in England"

This example is in very good overall condition considering its age. There are no cracks or chips on the piece. There is some light crazing all over, but on the whole this is a clean piece with just a couple of areas of discolouration on the face of the drainer. There are also three firing tripod marks from the time of production, which would have been common on all these items at the time.
