This is a listing for a wonderful rarely seen antique late 19th Century French brulot coffee cup. It is very rare to see examples this old. It is a heavy piece made from thickset ironstone.
Used in bistros and cafes, coffee was an expensive commodity at the time and was served in thick cups to help keep it warm and to be at less risk of spillages. The base of these cups was indented to have a serving of brandy in afterwards, which would have been warmed by the coffee. There is no maker's mark but there are etched size marks on the base.
There are no chips or cracks but there are some signs of wear with nibbles to the rims and some light staining and scuffs in places. There is a small firing fault in the base where there is a gap in the glaze but this doesn't affect use in any way.
