A lovely example of antique advertising in the form of a carved wooden breadboard for Allinson Bread, dating from the 1920s.

Circular carved wooden bread boards were very popular in the early part of the twentieth Century, often given as wedding gifts. Capitalising on their popularity, Allinson, a well known flour producer in the United Kingdom, produced these bread boards as an opportunity to advertise their own produce.

This is a good example of an antique breadboard, with the lettering and carving still clearly visible. It sits nice and flat, and so is still very usable.

There is some wear to the board, with a watermark visible in the centre plus some odd splashes of white in places. The back of the board has some scorch marks to the edge, plus there is more evidence that this side was used more for cutting as there are more knife marks from use. But these show the board has been well used and loved. The carving is still crisp and you may wish to wax it to enhance the colouring.
