Vintage French White Ironstone Butter Pat – Advertising Beurre d’Isigny

A wonderful example of a rare octagonal shaped early 20th Century carved breadboard, with a timeworn patina and charm.
An early piece, it is likely that this subject was designed to be targeted at the wedding market. Since Victorian times, it was common for a breadboard to be given as a wedding present, which was opened up to wider classes at the turn of the 20th Century.
These English carved treen breadboards are becoming rarer and rarer to source, especially in this wonderful shape and still in usable order.
This board features a rosette and leaf border around its edge. It has clearly been well loved, with significant wear and knife marks across the board and especially notable on the main part of the board. While this has worn the definition of the carved border, the pattern is still very recognisable and the cut marks add a unique timeworn charm to the board.
Remarkably, for a board that has clearly seen lots of use, it still sits flat. This means it’s a great board to continue using. And, when not in use, its wonderful aged patina looks great on display.
