Late 1800s White Ironstone Granitine Improved Rational Plate Washer, Ideal Sink Tidy

antique edwardian 1920s smiths crisps shop display glass jar counter

A lovely piece of white ironstone advertising, the Granitine Improved Rational Plate Washer, dating from the late Victorian period.

This is a wonderful example of white ironstone produced in the late 1800s. Originally made for the photographic market, the “Improved Rational” plate washer was used to clean photgraphic plates. Featuring black transfer print advertising both the name of the item and the “Granitine” makers mark and their registered trademark number.

This piece shows the versatility of antiques through time. Although it’s now rare for this to be used in a darkroom, it would look wonderful in a modern kitchen as a sink tidy to store washing up liquid, cloths etc. Or, alternatively, it could be used for bathroom or utensil or brush storage.

This storage unit is in excellent condition for its age. There are no cracks, chips or dents. There is light crazing all over the piece, some of which has discolored (most notably on the base and the bottom rim). There are some light surface cracks to the glaze inside and some dark age spots in places too. The ironstone has also very slightly yellowed in places. But these do not detract from the quality of the white ironstone which is evident. It’s a great piece of history which would look wonderful – and serve a useful purpose – in a modern home.
