Antique Victorian White Ironstone Banded Kitchen Storage Jar – Rice

1930s antique Meredith Drew glass shop counter advertising display jar

A highly collectable Victorian banded white ironstone storage jar for “RICE”, in nice condition with its original lid.

These white ironstone storage jars were popular when foodstuffs were often sold in loose measures in local grocers shops. This Victorian example dates from the late 1800s and has beautiful scroll script typography on the front in black transfer print which is still very clear.

This banded storage jar is in good overall condition. There are no cracks or hairlines but it has suffered a couple of knocks over the years, with three chips in the base rim and a small chip on the rim where the lid sits. Only one of these – the smallest – is visible on the front of the pot, and measures 5mm wide by 2mm high. The two other chips are located on the side and base of the jar, and can’t be seen when the jar is on display. There is also light crazing all over this jar, but this adds to the timeworn antique charm of this piece.

Overall, though, it’s a great size, is still very sturdy and is a popular subject which makes it very useful today. A beautiful piece either to start or add to a collection of white ironstone antique storage jars.
